JUDGING CRITERIA and what we tell our judges to look for in our contestants.
We look for a naturally beautiful contestant who is well poised, has good personality and wants to hold a state title and be active during her year as our title holder.
Contestants in our system ages 3-9, do not wear make-up. Girls ages 10-12 only wear simple make-up such as light foundndation, light powder, light blush, lip gloss & mascara. We do not allow dark (dark blues, browns, greens, black) eye shadow or heavy/dark red lip stick. Ages 13-24.can wear appropriate make-up, still allowing their natural beauty to shine.
Clothing is also age appropriate. You do not need custom or designer dresses to compete in our system. Sunday, party, flower girl, or pageant dresses are fine for the younger ones. Preteens-up can wear ball gowns, prom, or pageant dresses. Custom dresses are appropriate as long as the dress is age appropriate. You want the the girl to wear the dress, not the dress to wear the girl. This is also true in all optional modeling events. We also prefer natural untouched pictures of the girls when competing in photogenic.
Overall appearance, and beauty, eye contact, smile, personality/stage presence all make up the total score
Our scoring system is based on non comparison judging and is made up of the following scoring brackets:
1-3 - was not prepared and needs improvement, Attire change needed.
4-6 - good but could make minor changes in attire, needs a little more practice, needs better stage presence
7-9 - very good - great stage presence and personality, little to no improvement needed, well prepared, appropriate and well fitting attire
10 - perfect, no suggestions for changes
Many systems will tell judges to give a 9. (point) something to everyone and the . (point) something is the contestant's real score. Or you may have a system where the director instructs the judges to give nothing lower than an 8. We do not believe in that. The contestants get the scores deserved based on the above criteria. In the case of a tie, the facial beauty score is used to determine the outcome. If needed, the photogenic score will be used as well. We no longer will allow ties for the Queen's title
We refuse to use friends of contestants as judges and only use reigning queen's parents as judges when a judge cancels or in an extreme need. We will not use the same preliminary pageant judges as state or national judges. We also will not use parents of any girls who are currently competing in local type pageants. We look for individuals who have no connection with any of our contestants. If by chance a judge knows a contestant, we will not allow their scores to be included. The highest score from each of the other judges will be used (if 3 judges) or the average of all scores (if 5 judges). This prevents any type of "conflict of interest" or "COI".
Personality, overall appearance, eye contact, smile, stage presence all go in to the total score.
When at all possible we use a person who is considered a "judge's chairman or judge's chair" who is the only person who interacts with the state and national judges during the full competition. The judge's chair is responsible for the score sheets and verification of scores/winners. We do not return hard copy score sheets. Our scores are entered in a computer program that was designed especially for pageant tabulation. We will provide scores via email as time allows.
Close family friends of the director are not permitted to compete in any of our competitions. This prevents any possible accusation of "conflict of interest" or "COI".
Awards presented at preliminary and state competitions include crowns, banners, trophies, plaques, (at State level) saving bonds (scholarship money), cash and many gifts. At our state level, personal email addresses are also given for use during their year. Everyone receives recognition at all levels of competition.
Our Promise to You!
